How Not to Waste an Interviewer's Time

While there are pertinent interviewing tips around the web, one should be careful as there are some tips that will hurt the interviewer when implemented.

How do we know which ones to trust and which ones to toss aside? This is where one's intuition comes in, though I can assure you that the below techniques have worked for even the most senior of job seekers.

Be Nice and Know What You're Talking About

Be Polite - By polite I mean that you should think about what the employer needs and not what you want. Many times, job seekers only consider their needs and while we all tend to put ourselves first, this is not the best strategy when going for a job.

The best advice I could give those is to take a few minutes prior to going into an interview and write down what you think are the needs and the concerns of the employer. Then, make sure you touch upon those in the interview and you should impress without failure.

Know the Company and Industry - Many times, interviewers go into the meeting without the required knowledge (for various reasons) and are lost half the time, especially when the interviewer discusses their company and their industry which is almost a guaranteed topic when interviewing.

Take the time to do your research on both the company and the industry. You will be quite glad with the outcome as you can almost guarantee yourself a leg-up in the runnings.

Otherwise, you're just wasting the interviewer's time as they took the time to read over your resume, reciprocate.

Don't Interrupt, Listen Carefully - Interrupting is one of the worst habits one can have when interviewing, It is a surefire way to p*** the person off and make sure that you are not invited back.

If you have something to say, write it down. People hate being interrupted and you can be sure that if you interrupt and make a false assumption, you're not going to get the job.

Mirror Your Interviewer - One way to turn the interviewer off is to bore them via coming across as someone very dislike them in nature. If an interviewer speaks slowly, you do the same. If they are a fast talker, consider yourself a fast talker.

In Closing

The above interviewing tips have worked for many and while most take some time and practice, they are well worth the effort. Though, the practice and effort can mean a better career which is the stepping stone to being happy everyday going to work which only happens when you don't waste an interviewer's time and make them NOT feel appreciated.
