How to Write a Cover Letter

Writing a cover letter is a lot easier than most job seekers make it out to be. However, when written incorrectly it often leaves the job seeker frustrated and not getting the responses that he or she wants to. Below, you'll find a few tips for writing a cover letter which should ensure more responses than what you are getting:

Tips

1. Each cover letter should be unique - It's not effective to think that one cover letter should do the trick every time for every job; this is just the same as resume writing. When applying to jobs, your applicantions should be less in number and more in customization.

2. Should state your relevant skills - Remember that when you're writing a cover letter, it's not about what you want, rather it's about what you can provide the employer with. Discuss what you can do for them and the skills that you bring.

For instance, if a job description says that they want x,y and z and you have those skills, there is no reason to not include these. If you don't have the skills, it's best to learn them, then apply for the position, not the other way around.

3. Should be brief and written for the web - Don't make your cover letter over three paragraphs and, when you write it, make sure that the format is easy to read not for you, but for the web.

For instance, if you are to look at articles around the web, you'll see a few things in common. One of the these happens to be paragraph length and an easy to read font.

Regarding paragraphs, they should be not longer than 3 sentences and you should widen your paragraphs. Regarding font, look at some of your favorite websites, determine what font they're using and do the same.

Unfortunately, many main Word texts do not go well with the web. Remember that your CV and cover letter are not going to be printed out, rather they will be read from a computer screen.
