Negotiating Salary Continued

Rarely would I recommend going higher than 10 - 15% more than the base salary you are offered. Though, this is not a hard and fast rule.

3. Be honest with yourself - Do you think that you will get the raise in salary or do you think you will get declined? As a rule, if you are over 50% leaning towards getting declined, take the offer, do well at the position and negotiate later.

Though, if you're over 50% confident that you are the best option for the employer, go for it. Remember that the more options the employer has, the less likely they are to bend, however if you know that the hire is very time sensitive or you are a perfect fit on paper, this is reason for a "go-ahead."

4. Don't use ambiguous metrics - Have a reason why you're asking for the number you are. This means doing your research as to what similar jobs are paying, gauging the number against other offers you may have or comparing it to your current salary.

Though, the last thing you want to do as a job seeker is to base the salary you are asking for on intangible numbers such as what you think you deserve or what your friends in dissimilar industries are making.
